Lauren S. Zapf.jpg

As a licensed professional counselor (LPC) and approved clinical supervisor (ACS), Lauren has worked with diverse men and women in multiple therapeutic settings, including residential and outpatient drug treatment programs, universities, legal systems, and hospital emergency departments. As a doctoral-level researcher, she designed a wellness assessment to support counseling interventions that better match with service women’s unique concerns, including the effects of trauma and lack of social support.
In addition to her clinical experience in various settings, including in private practice where she has worked with service members diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder, she is currently a clinical supervisor at Court Services and Offender Supervision Agency (CSOSA), an independent federal agency. There, she provides evidence-based interventions for those in the criminal justice system struggling with substance use disorders, including coordinating the agency’s only drug and alcohol relapse prevention/aftercare program.
Passionate about veterans’ needs, she has been selected as a fellow with Service Women’s Action Network, the leading advocacy nonprofit organization for women veterans, and has volunteered as a therapist at the Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) program held each May during National Police Week, providing interventions for children who have lost a family member in the line of duty.
As a doctoral-level clinician, she has received extensive training in counseling, supervision, instruction/group facilitation, and research, earning a doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Marymount University, a CACREP-accredited program, where she also taught multiple master’s-level classes, including substance abuse counseling and research and evaluation. Lauren also earned master’s and educational specialist degrees from James Madison University and a bachelor’s degree from the United States Naval Academy where she lettered in women’s varsity basketball. She served six years of active duty in the Navy as a Surface Warfare Officer, earning two Navy Commendation Medals.
She currently resides in Northern Virginia with her husband and two sons and enjoys running and practicing yoga.
