Akhila Murphy is a Certified Yoga Instructor with over 450 hours of formal teacher training and over 2000 hours of teaching experience. She founded Dragonfly Yoga Studio in Penn Valley, CA in 2005.  After experiencing a traumatic event in her own family, Akhila felt compelled to learn more about how yoga and meditation can help those experiencing post-traumatic stress. In 2009 she completed Yoga Warriors International training for Veterans with PTS. In 2012 & 2014 she completed two week-long teacher training sessions with Veteran's Yoga Project: Mindful Yoga Therapy for Veterans Coping with Trauma Level 1, and Mindful Resilience Training Level 2.

Inspired by the Veterans Yoga Project Training, Akhila was anxious to begin yoga classes for Veterans at her Yoga studio in Penn Valley. After meeting with Page and Gary Brown of Welcome Home Vets in Grass Valley, CA a Mindful Yoga Therapy / Yoga for Vets program was launched at Dragonfly Yoga Studio in Penn Valley. Akhila collaborates with Welcome Home Vets (a local non-profit that provides counseling services to veterans and families) and she receives referrals from their program to her Yoga for Vets program.  Akhila's Yoga for Veterans and Active Duty Military class began in July 2012. Her first participants were Vietnam War veterans from all branches of service who had never done yoga before! Many had experienced the effects of PTS and most of the original dedicated participants are still coming every Monday at 4:45p.m.
